Talking from a mutual colleague point of view- She is a team secretary but she seems fake nice. She does get her job done on time and she seems to know what she's doing but she's very whispery and giggly with alot of the direct male superiors. She speaks to me nicely if spoken to but if i didn't say anything to her, she'd behave as though i didn't exist, she is secretary to me too but doesn't do any of my secretarial work for me. I'm new in the establishment and I'm not shy but there's a certain something about her i find really rude.

As a secretary myself I must say that I am not bitchy. But generally it can be a stressful job. And yeah the pay is usually pretty low when the secretary is the one doing most of the work and the boss doesn't do much but gets paid the big bucks. So I think that's enough to make anyone a little bitchy.

she's picking up on your attitude.. and you sound as though you're the only female. Women tend to be tougher on other women than they are men.. go figure..
Anyway, you didn't ask how to solve this problem, but here's how.. compliment her on something not work related.. for example, sometime when you overhear her handle a tough situation, lean over and confidentially whisper to her that , "Wow, you handled that well, I could learn a few things from you".. and that kind of stuff. Don't sound fake, even though you are being fake.. just suck up a bit.. obviously, since you're not a secretary, and you outrank her, she's trying to beat you in the only way she knows how.. by aligning herself with the guys.. and trying to make you look bad. The guys don't care one way or another, I'll guarantee it, unless they feel threatened by you also. You got a lot of power here, figure out how to use it! You'll have her eating out of your hand in no time..for now, ignore the bitchiness

Okay, I've been in the administrative field for over 15 years and I'll tell you what....she's trying to keep her position. She's been there a while I take it, so she wants to make sure that you are aware she's not going anywhere.

Now, once she feels secure she may warm up to you. As far as the fact that she's supposed to do your secretarial work, well I would take that up with your supervisor or hers. If she's not doing her job than that issue must be resolved. Do not let her get you caught in the "she doesn't like me so she's picking on me" trap. She'll do it if she feels her job is being threatened.

Not all of us are bitchy, but our field is one that is large and it's easy to get replaced unless your fight for your job. being a women makes it a little harder as well - for you that is- all women are threatened until they get to know each other.

Hope things work out.

Hello,

Most secretaries have to perform tasks that are outside of their job description. They generally do these tasks (or forced to do these task) at minimal or low pay, creating a stressful situation.

Secretaries have multiple duties, from answering phones, dealing with employee issues, personal issues, organizational tasks, supervisor requests, customer issues, etc. They are constantly multitasking; and sometimes the stress sits in when there is just too much going on (or if they're dealing with a customer/employee with the same request/question that they previously answered 1,000 other times).

You're really asking "Why is this secretary so bitchy?", because you're only talking about this one person, aren't you ? It's unfair to slam all secretaries because of her.

Doctors' receptionists on the other hand can all be slammed, I have never met a pleasant one, I think being horrible must be part of their job description

I'd say that many (not all) are a little cranky because their jobs are the very definition of stress: a lot of responsibility, not a lot of authority. And not a lot of respect or money.

She loves herself and goodness knows why, she got a crap job with crap money and having to suck up all the time to men shows just how low she will stoop to be liked.
