definitely stay away from the parties. they are all too tempting, i know, but you will need the time to study/write papers/go to class/etc. Try and find someone from your town or someone you know to be your roommate...someone who is into studying...your roommate can be a big influence on you. Make sure that you don't skip meals, because good nutrition can affect your grades as well. also, try not to get too discouraged if you don't make the dean's list or whatever the first semester. the first semester is the hardest, just because of the transition. Just do your best, learn some good study habits, and all will be fine......good luck!!!

Go to class..miss class only if you are too sick to crawl out of bed..LITERALLY..You would not believe how much is covered in 1 class..you miss it and you have missed a lot..a lot of prof will base your grade on attendance (if your borderline it will hurt you). Study 2 hours for every 1 hour of class MINIMUM.. take advanatge of tutoring and learning labs..those people can become your best friends. Eat right (not just chips and soda) sleep properly..don't cram for test..u won't learn or remember anything. Remember this: if you ever let your GPA get really low..it will take forever to bring it back it up..I had a 0.5 my first sem. It took me 5 sem. to get it up to a 2.0..that said..as important as socializing is don't party..study..but don't study all the time...you have to have a rest and socialize at least some just don't spend all your time partying and sleeping in..not going to class. You will be my age. and wish to God you could do it over.

Stay away from the parties and the frats until you know your limits in terms of work load and how much you personally need to study. Expect to work a LOT harder in college than you did in high school, no matter how good your grades were in high school. Work hard, concentrate on your studies, and stay away from the booze and the drugs that will fry your brain, as well as from the people who think that staying bombed/stoned is "cool."

Put studying before partying and you'll do fine. Remember, you're there to get a decent education and some decent grades. There's plenty of time for partying in the summer and after you graduate.
Good luck.

Don't put your work off until right before exams, work on it a little each day/week...if you have a bad roommate, ask for a transfer, no sense suffering....take at least one course per semester that you really like, don't take all general ed, or degree requirement courses immediately....have FUN!

I agree with everyone that stated their claim. But I am a Dean List student. My very best advise is to get acquainted with your professor. Because your studying does not become a guessing game and you able to appreciate your education more. Trust me you will ace college easily!!! KNOW YOUR PROF EXPECTATIONS!!!

Working hard and spacing out difficult classes are two things that were already mentioned.
Also, use http://www.ratemyprofessors.com , word of mouth, and published student ratings (if your college does these) to find easy and interesting professors. That one really helps.

study now, party later.. also, if you're thinking about getting a job while in college, wait until you're on your second semester so you can adjust to the classes and stuff. Don't slack because you will pay for it later.. trust me!
