I mean, one of the wealthiest athletes in history, the kid that was supposed to be the next Mickey Mantle, is in my opinion on of the biggest flops in any sport ever. What is wrong with him, is he not healthy or is he a burnout with a really good agent?

I would hardly call a future hall of famer overrated. He's career stats are impressive and to be fair his career is far from being over. He may well prove that he has what it takes. And as for Mickey Mantle, no one could ever be that great. Mantle was the most talented baseball player ever to play the game.

I think he is overpriced, but definitely not overrated. He has been consistently healthy his whole career, unlike the Mick. He just got a lot of money that year because teams really overpaid for good players (like Chan Ho Park, 5 years, 55 million). He still had a good season, driving in over 120 runs, but no one can live up to the expectations everyone sets for Rodriguez. The New York media talks about him as if he's some cocky rookie who's got no talent to back his mouth up, when he has a world of talent. He's already close to 500 home runs and he's in his early 30s. He has a legitimate shot at becoming the all-time MLB home run king. His single-season highest hit total and home run total are higher than Mantle ever got. He is a great player, and the Yankees are lucky to have him.

No way. Alex Rodriguez IS the next Mickey Mantle. He will go past Hank Aaron HR wise, before the end of his career. Alex Rodriguez aka ARod is the most highly-paid superstar in baseball, the youngest player to reach 400 HR's and will be the youngest to reach 500 also. He is the youngest and one of the only men in the exclusive 40-40 club. So, no he is noth overrated. But no he is not the best athlete in baseball. In my opinion, either Derek Jeter or Albert Pujols are the best athletes in baseball. But Alex Rodriguez IS NOT overrated.

To many, yes, he is overrated. There are many who find it difficult to see past the contract that he has. To others no he is not overrated and find that his numbers are in line with where he need to be. The trouble with most is that unless your a superman and put up gargantuan numbers, your a overrated failure and in no way is Alex a failure. He's human. There are many times when watching him he looks lost at the plate and i wonder if its just mental and I really truly think that he would be much happier off the NY stage and playing for a team that he can again enjoy the game of baseball. No matter what you say about him, I am sure that most baseball fans here would welcome him in their teams lineup. Overrated or not.

alerx may be a little overrated but can you blame people for the hype created around him. He is a career .305 hitter, with 1,347 rbi's and 464 homers. With those numbers at the age of 31, you have to expect the hype around him. He might not perform great during the postseason but not everyone is perfect. People are bashing on him with numbers like .290 average, with 35 homers, and 121 rbis. Some players will kill for a year like that and this is Alex's "off" year. Come on, give the man a break

"Is Alex Rodriguez overrated?"
No. Have you taken a look at the numbers he puts in year after year after year? They're monstrous but you already know that...

"the kid that was supposed to be the next Mickey Mantle..."
No. The kid was suppose to be Alex Rodriguez. One of the greats of the game. When he retires... he'll be one of the greats of all-time.

"in my opinion on of the biggest flops in any sport ever"
Do you know what a troll is?

A-rod is the most talented player in the league, no doubt about it. Since comming to New York he hasn't been able to play up to his own talent level because he has a mental block. Once or if he is able to passed this mental block he will again be the leagues mvp. This year is make or break for him in New York. He can have the numbers like he did last year and if he produces in the playoffs, in 2008 he should be everyones number 1 pick in fantasy sports. He may not put up over 50 home runs in new york because face it, Texas was a hitters park for lefties and righties, Yankee Stadium favors the lefties but i think his 05 numbers will be a more ideal outcome.

i would say yes he is, in the same aspect that payton manning is in the nfl.

both guys are great players, and will make it into thier respective hall of fame's without question. but they simply can't produce in pressure situations.

arod had better numbers playing for seattle and texas than he has had playing for the yankees. that's not because his talent level has gone down, it's because some people just don't play as well when all eyes are on them. if arod got traded to a team that doesn't have the national spotlight i'd be willing to bet his numbers would increase again.

Hey, great players tend to have their flaws... Alex Rodriguez is definitely not overrated!!! He is by far, one of the best baseball player. Sure he had an awful season this past season.. but give him a break. His numbers were still GREAT, he also had over 11 game winning plays this past season... OVER 11!!!! Which means that we might have not even made it to the play-offs if it weren't for his contribution to the team. So, like I said, Alex Rodriguez is NOT OVERRATED!!!

Oh and Happy Holidays :)

First of all, lets see you make it to the majors, then you can talk, and if you ever did make it to the majors, lets see you play in NY the media there is so rediculous, maybe he just doesnt have the mental strength to deal with doubters like you, the media there is enough to take one mistake and turn it into the end of your career. That streak of errors he had was a combination of two things, first of all, he was born and bred to be a shortstop, obviously that spot in NY belongs to Jeter, so he did something a lot of players wouldnt do, gave up what he wanted to make a team better, alot of players would have just gone somewhere else where they could be the shortstop, and more importantly the star. Secondly he probably had one bad game and the NY media put him through hell day after day untill even the most confident man in the world would start to doubt himself. and he is most certainly one of the most talented players in the league, maybe he just needs to go to a smaller market with less pressure to be perfect. And I hate to tell you but the biggest flop in sports history is Ryan Lief

No he isn't. Alex Rodriguez is a near perfect ballplayer, he's overrate at third, when he was at short, the guy was unstoppable, he has above average speed, he can hit for average, incredible power, plus he was a terrific fielder at short. I'd take A-Rod as one of the best players of all time.
