Registered Nurse here; Dear Sophia l, no it will not hurt your son, it at the very worst may make him gag. This is a wonderful test, for it allows the physician to know almost instantly weather your child has strep or not, and can be started on the right antibiotic. Please don't worry. Offer and follow through with giving your son a treat if he will corporate with the Doctor and Nurse. Suggest one of his favorite treats, perhaps, Ice Cream Cone, etc., possibly a small inexpensive toy. But I think both mom and son will be relieved when it's over. It is very simple and the doctor or nurse swabs the the tonsils usually on both sides. Takes less than a minute. And that's it over with. Merry Christmas!, Trust me things will go great. Thanks for the opportunity to address your question.

It won't hurt at all; they will swab the sides of his throat. Some people gag a tiny bit, but that's it. Don't mention not opening his mouth, and there's an excellent chance he won't even think of it. Just tell him to pay attention to the doc/nurse, and do what they say - having an authority figure doing the job works wonders ;-)

You have nothing to worry about.

They'll use two Q-Tips to quickly wipe the back of the throat. It's a little uncomfortable, but only takes a second. It'll be over before he knows it.

The good news is that will allow the doctor to properly diagnose and treat your son and get him feeling better sooner.

Explain to your son ahead of the visit what they will be doing. This way he wont be surprised and tell him there will be a prize afterwards. They take two long Q-tips and swab the tonsils. It wont hurt unless he thrashes around and gets poked with the Qtips. I would suggest you sit him between your legs and then ask him to open his mouth for the doctor and not move. If you see that he is moving his head or trying to grab the doctor's arm or Qtips, then you need to give him a bear hug to hold his arms down and hold his forehead back against your chest. The test doesnt take long at all as long as he cooperates.

It won't hurt him at all - they just take a long cotton swab and wipe the back of his throat. It may stimulate his gag reflex, but he will not be hurt...the nurse will guide you in how to hold him still...Most cultures take about 3 seconds, if the patient cooperates...

It's very easy and a pretty quick process.

They just take the q-tip-like device and stick it in the back part of his mouth, by his tonsil area and get a little sample, it doesn't hurt. If anything he might gag a bit, but shouldn't take long or be that big a problem.

I think the most you should fear is the way you act when your child is in the room. The nurses and doctors are professionals and 99.9% of the time capable of handling all types of personalities. They take a cotton swab - like a large q-tip and just swab the throat. I would not explain this to my child prior to my doctors appointment - it gives them room for more thinking and then they get scared.
Be sure to bring along a favorite toy, blanket, book, etc. Most offices provide these there, but just in case . .. do bring his favorite in the event he does get emotional.
You really need to make it as eventful as possible for your child. Don't worry, he'll be okay!!
