yes its better than the old ps2 because its got the modem built in
The old ps2 needed the add on modem, which is discontinued now

If you mean do you need to use the PS2 network adapter, then no, the slimline PS2 has it built in, you will also be able to use your current CentralStation access codes and such, as well as all of your game saves, as these are not console dependant, (you shouldn't even need to re-create your network setting files, as these are stored on your memory card).

Yes you can go online, but you can't use the hard drive to go online with the slim Ps2, only with the original one. (P.S. The slim one load's faster.)
