Go to a certified gemologist, not just a jewelry store, and see what they say. If they have been in business for years and can give certified appraisals, perhaps they'll look at it without an official appraisal. Certified appraisals cost so I hope you understand this before you ask them to appraise the ring.

Don't let the ring out of your site. Go with the jeweler wherever he/she takes the ring. Politely state that you go anywhere the ring goes.
Don't let them take it into a back room without you.

Please be careful, and somepeople can switch the diamond out and put in a lower quality in a matter of minutes.

GOD bless us one and all, always!

It is worth exactly what someone will be willing to pay for it.

Older cuts of stones aren't as popular today, and often bring less money. If it is a very good stone, and large, it may be worth more if a jeweler is able to re-cut it along more modern lines.

You might get more from someone interested in older stones as collectors items rather than as a straight jewelry sale.

Take it to several jewelers and see what they say. Then take it to an insurance appraiser, and see what he says. Then take it to a professional auction house, like Christie's, and see what their evaluator says. Among all those, you should have a fair idea of what it might bring in today's market.

tough call. the rigid standards which are in place today (the 4 C's) were not imposed as closely in 1973.

if it is a single rock which is huge, you may have a stone with poor clarity or color.

if the 4 C's hold up, then you're probably should assess value around 60k or so.

It depends, with some rings it would go up some it would go down, I would definetly have it appraised. My dad's ring has gone up by like 5.000 since he got it. : )
