A wolf is going to be a lot bigger. Like you might mistake it for a deer. The color on wolves can be really variable, but coyotes are always kind of yellowish/brownish/grayish. And I think the odds of you seeing a wolf in Kansas are slim. It was probably a coyote.

The quick way is their snout or the area from the tip of their nose to somewhere between their eyes, coyotes have are very slender in this area, A wolf has a more pronounced structure in this area. Most wolves are bigger and more well kept looking, Coyotes aren't much in personal grooming, if they were people, you might say to one, hey, just get out of bed, comb your hair.

If you saw one in Overland Park Kansas, then you saw a coyote. Wolves do not inhabit the state of Kansas.

A coyote will always look too thin, even if it is well fed. This gives them the appearance of having legs too long for their body size.
