I bought gateway laptop in April for $700, with AMD turion 64 Processor, 1 gb RAM, 80 gb Hard Drive, DVd+rw and much more and the wide screen monitor .... I love it ... I am a power user, using it for a lot of graphics, and it does all I need and more .... I was limited by finances, but this is great.
Beware Best Buy ... they do the bait and switch on ads ....
I bought last two laptops at Circuit City ...

Go to dell.com or check places like Best Buy. There are many notebook computers available for under $1000, actually. You'll just have to look at things like portability, hard drive capacity, amount of RAM, network options etc. Notebooks in that range can all handle tasks like word processing, accounting, e-mail, web browsing and looking at photos & movies.
They won't be good for gaming, but otherwise they're fine.

thats funny cause my ma just baught a notebook for my uncle for about $500 at Best Buy!!** other good store might be Circuit City but i'd stick with Best Buy cause they have all the sales
