Okay, I'm knitting a hat for a teenaged friend of mine. It's going to be a cat-eared hat, so all you really have to do is knit a rectangle and fold it in half, then seam it. The problem is I'm deciphering an infant pattern, and I don't know how many stitches to cast. I'm using size 7 needles.

Also, I'm making knittens, but the pattern lists sizes from 6-10, (half sizes included.) What size would a normal adult female be?

Knit a swatch and measure the number of stitches in an inch. Multiply the number of stitches/inch with the number of inches you want the circumference of the hat to be. For example, in the gauge of 5st/in, a 20" circumference hat will require 100 stitches. (I would estimate an adult female hat to be generally about 20-22")

You should measure your gauge. It is the only definite way to get a true fit. Knit a swatch and measure how many stitches you have per inch. Multiply that by the circumference you want the hat to be, cast on, and start knitting! Usually an average size for women's mittens is 7 inches around the widest part of the hand. Good luck, and I hope that I helped.

For the "ears" I would try casting on 40 stitches. For the mittens, use a measuring tape around the palm, just above, but not including the thumb. I am a normal sized adult female with small hands. My measurement is 7 1/2", so my size for the mittens would be 7 1/2. Have fun with your project!

verify your gauge on your trend and then make a gauge of your 9 needles and word how close you're.. once you need to drop a stitch or 2 to get there it may artwork also if the trend is for more beneficial than one length do the smaller length.
