It was working fine the last time she used it. But when she went to turn it on, nothing happens, except a light comes on inside of the computer. I checked the switch and it's working fine. It's getting power because the light comes on. The weird thing is, that her husbands computer is now doing the same thing. Except for when you turn it on, nothing happens. No light or anything.

the light on the motherboard might be getting its power from the mobo's battery. it sounds like a power supply failure to me too. the fact that 2 computers in the same house experienced the same problem are a little suspicious, but they may have had a power surge that fried both of them. make sure they use surge protectors in the future.

DO NOT BUY A $35 POWER SUPPLY!!! this is what reduces your 120 Volt input from the wall outlet into 12 Volts for the processor, 3 volts for other motherboard components, and so on. buying a cheap power supply can ultimately lead to frying your motherboard and CPU altogether. it's better to spend $100 and get a quality PSU from a brand like Seasonic, OCZ, Enermax, or Thermaltake. Seasonic is my favorite.

it's possible that this (suspected) PSU failure has already damaged your motherboards. the only way to find out is to power them up and see if it works.

Try removing any unnecessary cards, drives, and memory. Be sure to use proper static control methods, basically, keep yourself and the computer grounded. Try booting up the computer with the minimum amount of hardware required for it to boot up. If the computer boots up, shut it down, and reinstall one piece of hardware at a time until you find the defective component. If it doesn't boot up, you may have a bad CPU, motherboard, or power supply. Check the power supply for obvious defects like the fan not running. The output voltages of the power supply can be checked with a DMM, if you know what to look for. If it's the motherboard, you're probably better off buying a new PC. A bad modem or network card is a common cause of your symptom.

Truthfully if you're asking your question on Yahoo answers, the best thing to do is take the computer to a service shop like Best Buy or Circuit City. There can be any number of reasons why you are experiaencing problems. Unless you know how to troubleshoot each component there's no point in you waisting you time on Yahoo asking for answers. You have to remember that Yahoo Answers includes experts and some (not so experts).

Classic power supply failure. The lights come on, but no one is home.

If you keep trying, you might get it to fire, and then it will run forever unless you turn it off.

A new power supply costs around $35 and is fairly easy to replace.
