Persian is Iranian. Persia is now Iran.

Persia comes from word Pars which was related to Fars, which is the root of "Farsi" which is the Iranian language.

Now, as for why some folks call themselves Persian and not Iranian, it's because of today's politics. The situation in Iran doesn't make it easy to introduce yourself to Americans as an Iranian.

The Persians are an Iranian people who speak the Persian language and share a common culture and history.

Significant numbers of Persians also reside outside of Iran, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan, with the largest communities found in the United States, Germany, England, Canada, Kuwait, Turkey and UAE. Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, and the UAE also have large populations of Persian descendents, referred to as Ajamis. Smaller communities are also found in surrounding countries and the Arabian Peninsula.

Persia is now called Iran.
1. It's located in the Middle East.
2. Has a population of around 70 million.
3. It is 1'648'195 km2
4. The official language of the country is Persian (Farsi) (which has nothing to do with Arabic) (61% of the population speaks Farsi and 39% speaks Turkish!)
5. They are white-skinned. (unlike Afghans and Eastern countries)
6. They are very hospitable and extremely patriotic
7. The official religion of the country is Islam (Shia) (Yet you can find Sunnis, Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians in Iran.)
8. Iran is a hot country. South of Iran is hotter than other parts.(Yet in north and north west of Iran it can be really frigid in winter)
I hope this info meets your needs ;)

Persia was a great empire that was defeated by Alexander. The country continued to use the name until about the fourties or fiftys. The name was changed to Iran, and still goes by that name.

Persia was what is now Iran, before the fall of the Ottoman Empire at the end of WWI...

Families who entered the US before WWII, often referred to themselves as Persians, and continue to do so. Those who are recent arrivals, refer to themselves as Iranian.

Namaste,
