i read the lord of the rings and there was a character named tom bombadil who and what is he i hoped that he might b in the movie but he wasnt so id like to know

Tom Bombadil is a supporting character in J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium. He first appears in Tolkien's fantasy epic "The Lord of the Rings", first published in 1954 and 1955. In the first volume, "The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo Baggins" and company first meet Bombadil in the Old Forest. He also appears in "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil", a book of verse first published in 1962, purported to contain a selection of Hobbit poems, two of which were about him.

The question of "who or "what" is Tom bombadil is one of the unknowns in literature.

He is unaffected by the ring so he would not have worked in the flow of Jackson's movie. Jackson said that it would lessent the evil of the ring. In the book it demostrates that the pure in heart are not effected by the evil in the ring. At least that is my opinion,
