We live in the midwest, Southern Illinois. What is the probabilty of us growing oranges and the best way to do it? It is only for our personal consumption and we're not looking for an orange farm or anything like like. We have had an apple tree, cherry tree. plum tree, and a full garden that all produced well for us. My husband believes that you must have certain climate conditions (either the south or the west) to grow oranges but I'm not so sure about that.
Your thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

The most significant problem to growing oranges or any citrus in southern Illinois will be the winter low temperatures. Below about 45 deg, the oranges will not produce well. Below about 28 deg. the tree itself will be damaged. If you can provide some protection, such as a plastic cover and even a light bulb for heat during freezing nights, then you may have a chance. The best solution is to grow the citrus in containers, and in winter move them to a warmed location. Link provided.

I don't know what the climat is like in Illinois, let alone Southern Illinois, since I live all the way in NZ lol.
But we have an orange tree at home, and I think oranges would grow best in sunny and hot climats, but with plenty of water too. You could do some research on Google to find out more about the types of climats oranges grow best in, what other requirements they need such as just how much water etc, but usually it would be in warm to hot climats. I know that oranges start blooming in spring and mature and grow during beginning of summer. It also depends on which kind of oranges you're planning to grow. Sorry I can't help you further.

Most orange trees I know about is in Florida and southern California. I recently moved to California and we have an orange and lemon tree. Most people here do have them and say the fruit won't be ripe until Feb. or March. If it gets down past freezing you may have to keep yours in the house during winter time.
