you know it really depends on which one you're asking of you know the answers are different fothe manga and completely different for the anime so i'll tell you both:

anime: these homunculi are created through failed human transmutations...and most of them were created by a human woman named dante. she used them as her pawns to cause wars across their world and get enough human sacrifices to create the philosophers stone everytime she needs to switch to a new body. she created her first philosopher's stone with hoenhiem (the elric brother's father) they were actually in love 400 years prior to the storyline in the anime

1) lust = who is the dead finacee of scar's older brother
2) gluttony = created by dante
3) envy = the first son of the elric brothers' father and dante who died because of mercury poisoning
4) sloth = the elric brothers' mom and later the fruhrer secretary
5) greed = created by dante
6) wrath = the dead child of the elric brothers' teacher izumi curtis
7) pride = is the fruhrer who was also created by dante

manga: they're all the same except that the fruhrer is actually wrath. since the manga is still beng released it's not really clear who or what the homunculi really are but it's for sure that lust, greed, glottuny, and envy are pretty much the same. their pasts or reason for existance are unknown at this point. but the person who controls them is not human and he looks exactly like hoienhiem it's like he's impersonating god or something it's weird cuz it seems like the homunculi are created by his blood. in the manga they're not failed human transmutations they're perfected human being...they tell the background of the fruhrer though and about how he was chosen and injected with this guy's blood...it's really weird cuz it's not clear yet..but one thing is though..the elric brothers' father is one of the homunculi...

According to the Full Metal Alchemist anime version (I'm not sure how much different the manga/comic version is with regards to the nature of the relationships of the characters), there are indeed 7 of the homonculus:

Sloth - the homonculus formed after the Elrich brothers attempted to ressurect their mother; poses as Juliet Douglas, the Fuhrer's secretary

Pride - the Fuhrer (in the manga, he was created by the military I think but in the series, he was created by Dante)

Envy - the long-haired small guy that changes form (took the form of the priest, and that of the wife of Intelligence officer Hughes to kill Hughes off); first appeared with the homonculus formed after Hikaru no Hohenheim (Hohenheim of Light) tried to ressurect his & Dante's son; his name is very fitting as it revealed by the end of the series that his rage to the Elrich brothers is fueled by their father's (Hohenheim's) doing of ressurecting him

Lust - the homonculus that took the form of the fiancee of Scar's brother who by the way Scar fell in love with as well and he happened to "save" in the end; in the movie, their Earth counterparts ended up together

Gluttony - the small fat guy that resembles Ziggy; he is always with Lust and is very loyal to her, "cares" deeply about her, and only Lust can make him obey

Wrath - the son of the Elrich brothers' mentor; the one who has taken Edward Elrich's arm and leg; in the end of the series, after being given an automail by Winry, he left. You'd learn what happened to him in the movie.

Greed - the first homonculus Dante has created; in the anime series, he was killed by Edward Elrich.
