My daughter is 13 and claims all her friends have one. I say she should wait until she learns to drive. What do you think?

I had one when i was 11. As long as she is a responsible person you should get it!

I personally had to wait until I could pay for one myself. I think that my mom was a little too harsh on this. I was very involved in after school stuff and a cell phone would have kept me waiting for a ride in the cold many evenings. My personal thoughts are that if they honestly need (NEED, not WANT) one, then allow them to have one. Just make sure they can act responsible with it and something tells me a 13 year old probably isn't ready to do that. Maybe when she gets to high school and can be trusted not to run up a $400 phone bill!

I don't think young kids need one to be talking to their friends all the time...if they were in a situation where they need to keep in touch with parents and other phones weren't handy, then sure. Otherwise, when she can drive is appropriate because you'd want her to be able to call for help if she had car trouble.

well If she is responsible I got my first cell phone when i was 8 apparently my parents think I'm very responsible but i think 13 is ok because what if they were in a situation were she needs to call someone for an emergency.

I think that she needs one now. not wants, needs. if she ever gets into a accident, or is out and needs a ride back, she would have a ceel phoine and be b able to call u and be safe. Do u really want her roaming the streets at night and not be able to rech her? consider that. I am a 44 year old mother. I know what it is like. the best way to stop the madness, is to get her one and tellhe to shut up!!! lol. jk.

If she is responsible and knows it is for communication only, not game playing and running the bill off the map, she should have one. They make them with a tracker. You will be able to know exactly where she is at. I would get one like this.

my children are very young still, but i would imagine that by the time they are older, they will be asking for cell phones (probably by the age of 9!)

i say when you get a car, then you can get a phone. all other places you should be able to get ahold of your child (friends houses and such). no need for a cell phone.

Yeah its a good idea to give a new driver a phone to talk on. Is she old enough to help pay her own bill?
