If your friend has a router/firewall, then you need to know what her public IP address is AND manually edit the invitation (can be done using notepad) to correct the IP address (which is prob incorrectly showing her private internal LAN IP like 192.168.1.x) AND you need to configure the router for port forwarding on TCP port 3389. Good luck with that. I've done it, but by phone it takes so long to walk someone through it that your better off driving over if they don't live too far away. To find out her public IP, tell her to go to http://checkip.dyndns.org/

Try using the other person's IP address to make the connection instead of a computer name. Have your friend give you the IP address on their computer by clicking on Start, Run, then type CMD in the Run window. This will open what I call a DOS window. Type IPCONFIG and press enter to get the IP address. If you have Windows XP you must have the Remote Connection option selected. Check out the information below for more information.

You have to connect to the system's IP, make sure the remote IP is correct. If you're trying to connect to a 192.168 or a 10.1 it's wrong. You need the real IP of the machine.
