Because the shows stink so bad, no one with half a brain, or even alive would laugh at it. So they put in fake laughter.... man I hate sitcoms!!!! What a waste of time!!!

Yes, I think it's a bit stupid. It also sounds the same nearly all of the time which makes it so fake and unrealistic. I think they do it to give a certain atmosphere and to let people know it's a comedy show. Canned laughter is usually on American 'silly' humour tv shows. But I think it's very unnecessary due to the fact that sometimes the canned laughter is there and nothing is funny! :)

It makes the viewer feel like someone is laughing with them. So they dont feel like a loser laughing on their own. Trust me if you watched a sitcom without it, you'd feel weird.

yes. and the strangest part is it works, the typical audience will laugh more often if they hear someone else laughing. humans like conformity.
occasionally there are some brave shows that do without the canned laughs...but it's very rare unfortunately

When people hear laughter they are more apt to laugh themselves and for those who weren't sure then it is a gentle reminder that there was a joke or funny scene.

Very simple sweetie, it is the power of suggestion. If you hear someone laughing you will be more likely to laugh.

I think some shows that have very explicit timing or very fussy directors use the track because it guarantees true timing and is not a potential distraction.

Psychologists have proven that, upon hearing laughter, people will begin laughing themselves. Haven't you ever seen people crack up, and have no idea what they're laughing about, but you begin laughing anyway?

For people who don't get it.
I don't ever laugh at Letterman's jokes
It just makes the show more exciting for people
to go wow.... make the tv ratings go up.
but really most shows are fake.
