Nixon tried making it illegal to raise prices. His attempt only made matters worse. When the cost of employing a worker goes up, so does the cost of the product or service that worker produces. The trouble is that there are always workers willing to work for less than what is fair, so the idea that the minimum wage be abolished has become unthinkable. Conversely, the minimum wage has taken the bargaining power away from many workers. It's a vexing conundrum.

What do you want, more pay for flipping burgers? Don't expect anything more than what you need to survive. That is the definition of "MINIMUM WAGE" It's the minimum you need to survive, because you are doing minimal work. So you get minimal wage.

"shouldn't it be illegal for companies to raise there prices?"

Wow. That is so sad I think I'm going to cry. Prices are not raised by companies just because. Price is a product of supply and demand. There are so many economic forces which make up supply and demand that you can't even keep track of them really. Imagine if a retailer that sells shoes had to have its price locked for 6 months, and during that 6 months something happened that made shoes more valuable (I don't know, say Nike runs a wicked ad campaign), the retailer would have all its shoes bought at super low prices and go out of business. You see why that wouldn't work?

that's one reason why it's stupid to raise the minimum wage. Anyway, minimum wage is fine the way it is. It's not supposed to be profitable. It's a started job for teens or those with no education or ability. Keep the minimum wage low pushes people to get trained or get educated. Plus, studies show that 50% of those with minimum wage jobs are teens, and the other hald only stay there for six months. I mean, jobs don't pay welll when anyone can do it...

We live in a free market. If you have to change jobs to make more money, then you do so. Raising the minimum wage is government's misgiuded way of creating some illusion of fairness. All it does is contribute to wage inflation and the hiring of fewer unskilled workers. Politicians will pander to constituents and most do not know the first thing about running a business. They are despicable.

the problem is... things are going up regardless... minimum wage increase or no increase... inflation will happen...

it's been happening over the past few years with no min wage increase at all... so min wage clearly is not the only factor here...

in fact, such a small percentage of the population makes minimum wage, there probably won't be much of an effect at all...

price caps don't help any either... just the way it goes...

Prices will go up when the minimum wage goes up. A wise economist once said that one man's wage increase is another man's price increase. You're right -- it defeats the purpose.

And if you have a law raising the minimum wage whilst simultaneously prohibiting businesses from increasing their prices you'll drive businesses out of business rather quick. Hence, you'll have even more unemployment.

Now even more illegal aliens can steal your minimum wage jobs.

If the minimum wage goes up, does everyone else's salary go up the same amount. Of course not; that's why raising the minimum wage is political BS. My 17 yr old, non-driving niece make more than minimum wage. Her only skill is speaking English.

So companies (even small business, which is championed by the Democrat party) isn't entitled to make money?

Unfortunately, it's called inflation...more money in your pocket means that you can afford higher prices.

Keep raising the minimum wage and soon those working at McDonald's will be making the same amount and Doctors.

That's sounds fair, huh?

Supposedly small business owners are going to get a tax break to offset this raise in the minimum wage. However to be accurate, things are going up, the minimum wage has not gone up in ten years, under republican leadership I might add. So any people you hear whining on hear about the rise in the minimum wage are feeding the rest of us a line of crap.
