Supposedly a Thoroughbred. However, in the movie, he is played by MANY horses. Only a few are TB while others are Morgans and Quarter Horses.

The original Black Beauty was a Welsh breed. The one from the movie is a Quarter horse named " Docs Keepin Time" . Black Beauty was played by many breeds through out the years. But history of it will go back to a Welsh Bred horse. They were bred for pulling as well as stamina for running cross country. I hope this helps.

He was definitly a Thoroughbred. I think some people on here are confused as to whether your referring to the book or the movie. I dont know what breed they used in the movie, but in the book the horse was definitly a thoroughbred. And yeah, he was a black stallion, but like other people said that is not a breed of horse. Thats a description. In the book, i dont remember if they come right out and say his breed, but i know they keep making references back to his long straight legs, long elegant neck, his tall height, and sleek coat. All of these are characteristics of the Thoroughbred. And the person who said it was by walter farley is way off. The book was by Anna Sewell. And for the other person, a Gelding is NEVER a female horse. Always a castrated male.

Thoroughbred/Morgan

Please ignore the people that said Stallion. A Stallion is a male horse that hasn't had it's essentials removed and can still breed with a female horse (mare).

If he had had his bits taken off then he would be a gelding. The terms stallion and gelding refer to the horses testicles and have nothing to do with what breed they are.

It's a bit like a tom cat or a neutered cat.

Morgan's are more commonly found in America than the UK but thoroughbreds are common in either place. They are highly strung horses quite often

In the book by Anna Sewell Black Beauty was definitely a thoroughbred with racing bloodlines. There is also a series of books called Black Beauty's family by the three Pullein-Thompson sisters about Black Ebony, Black Princess, Black Velevet, Nightshade, Black Romany which were all thoroghbred except for Blossom who was TB x coloured cob. If you like Black Beauty you will enjoy these books as well as they are written in a similar style to the original Black Beauty & the stories are truely lovely tales about the different lives of these horses living in some very different time periods with very different backgrounds.

The 1994 version of Black Beauty featured Docs Keepin' Time, who is an American Quarter Horse.

First of all Black Stallion is not a breed of horse, it is a color with a gender (male that has not been castrated). Second, Black beauty's neck and face were too broad to be an Arabian. Finally, thoroughbreds are tall and lean but not at all as beautiful as Black Beauty. It is my opinion that Black Beauty was a Black Sterling Fresian.

Black beauty in my opinion was an anglo arab (tb x arab) He was only about 14.2hh which fits with the arab breed but he was to stocky to be a full arab. I really have no idea but that is what he looks like to me!

I can usually name any breed of horse by looking at them but I have to admit this one was a toughy! By the way there is no way he was a friesian as someone suggested, Friesians are big even the 'lighter' version
