I bought a linksys wireless-g usb network adapter recently and haven't been able to get it to work. I'm trying to install it on an old Gateway computer using Windows 98. I've already tried using the guide that came with the adapter, but it didn't work.
I go to the device manager and find the adapter disabled.
I then went to the adapter properties and under device status i find.
The NDIS, VXD, NTKERN, VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver. (Code 2.)

To fix this, click update driver to update the device driver.

I then click update driver and it brings me back to the same problem.

Is there any other way to install the adapter?

make sure that the USB controller is installed properly. the original version of Win 98 was terrible as far as USB compatibility. 98 SE included some fixes for that.

Usually Usb devices are plug and play. In this case when Windows 98 came out not very many people were useing Wireless internet so there may not be a way to use your adapter without updateing your Windows operating system to something more up to date like Windows 2000 or Xp. Xp comes almost fully set up to handle any kind of wireless internet and it makes it a breeze to use. The update pack for Windows Xp is usually found and any store that sells electronics i have seen it at Wal Mart and other fine retail stores like Best Buy and Circuit City

Can't imagine Win98 being the best thing to use now... but nevermind.

If you've got the CD that came with it, you should install that. Because Windows 98 does not have the capability to deal with wireless connections built into it. If you don't have the software for it, use a different computer and get the install program. You can get it from here:

And you're sure you have Win98 version2, right? The original Win98 didn't have usb support.
