Yes, I have heard of Best Buddies. It is an organization at the HS, college and post college age groups. the organization encourages the non disabled youth and young adults to pair with diabled young adults in order to form friendships and connections. The paired students are urged to keep in touch via phone, in person or by email. They are supposed to do something outside of school with the student with whom they are paired. Our HS has a branch and our students, both disabled and non-disabled love it. BTW, it was started by Anthony Shriver, son of Eunice Shriver who was the founder of Special Olympics.

Best Buddies is a national organization that works to break down barriers to friendship between 'regular' students and 'special' students. It works by pairing a general education student with a special ed student for after school activities. My son who has Down Syndrome, has been in the Best Buddies club at his high school for two years. When it is run well, it is a wonderful club. But of course, the experience for the special ed student is dependent on the involvement and interest of the regular ed 'buddy'.
