You have apparently forgotten that one of the basic tenents of Christian faith is that no one is sin-free. All have had sin in their lives, according to Christian doctrine. And forgiveness is extended toward those who are SORRY for what they have done.
Those "fundamental evangelical christians" whom you are talking about know that in modern times, homosexuals are NOT SORRY for engaging in the "sin" of homosexual behavior. Homosexuals are PROUD of it. And that is what is unforgivable -- PRIDE.

It's a mistake to confuse a leader of the church with the teachings of the church. I'm pretty sure that the evangelical church does not teach that having gay sex and doing drugs is okay.

it's because he turns away from his sin (supposedly) and makes a return to Jesus. Simply put, he continues to hide his homosexuality and continues in his homophobic ways. Nothing changed really, he just got caught. He will continue to chastize gay people and lead others to do the same thing. Kind of sad that so many are taken in by this extreme way of believing, I think

It is said that everyone, who sinned, be forgiven when they repent and ask for forgiveness to the condition that they don't sin no more.
Hypocracy when ministers chastize everyone else while he himself committing the unthinkable.

Yes, it is hypocritical. The "holier than thou" attitude brings them much contempt. But then, they are above it all.
