ok go to start, control panel,
click on performance and maintenance.
click on systems
click on tag hardware
click on device manager
click on moden and uninstall it (remove)
then close your system down, and reboot. on rebooting it should say found new hardware, and let it search for the drivers
if it finds the driver then all is well,
to install the new driver you will need to unpack it in a directory so make a directory called (modem driver) and copy the driver into that and unpack it,
then go through all the steps above till you get to the modem, this time double click on it and you will get a menu pop up then click on driver, and click on update driver, brows to the folder modem driver and click ok it will find the driver and install it
all should be well from there on

You have to first put the modem back to the Laptop, and then if you are using Windows, then it should automatically recognize it. Check on the Device Manager. To access it, right click My Computer, then click on the Hardware tab, and click Device Manager. Under Modem, click on the plus sign, and then if you see a Modem entry, you are all right, or if you see an exclamation point, then load the driver.

Good Luck

But if you got the backup disk i dont know if you have System restore. To use the system restore go start, accesories, system tools, system restore. I hope this helps
