you should get it a larger tank. How big is your fish? You can get it a small five gallon aquarium and tiny filter for cheap. You must understand though that you will need to upgrade to a larger one soon. It would be in your fish's best interest if you got a nice 10 gallon set up.
They sell 10 gallon aquariums that come with filter, hood, and a little setting up your aquarium booklet at petsmart for around 40$.
Then you will have to pay for gravel... uh you'll need about 10 pounds. It should be pretty cheap. Like less than 10$ probably.
Thats all you'll need for a while till you can afford some fake plants.
The reason your fish is upset is because its in such a small container. betta live happily in them but its wrong to put a goldfish in there.
I have a goldfish tank. Its 55 gallons. I did a science experiment with the eating habits of different types of goldfish and I had to put them in bowls to test them. Some of them got extremely depressed to the point of not even moving if you messed with them. In their big tank they are happy as can be and swim around a LOT. Until you can afford a bigger home change his water a lot. Like three times a week so the water quality doesn't kill him. They produce a lot of waste.
Get your fishy a nice small comfortable affordable home for the time being.
good luck... oh and i think they like flakes best. Is that what you feed him? They also LOVE oranges if you wanna try that.

Sometimes when fish are sumitted to a different envirement ,they can suffer from shock.caused by a change in temperature and/or water conditions. A Betta Bowl or tank is not suficent for a gold fish,as it is too small.Try at least a 5 gal tank. A 10 gal. is even better.
You mentioned that there is no filter or air.By all means use one if you can . the kit is rather inexpensive and is available at all stores or pet shops that sell fish.
If for some reason you can not provide the air or filter You must take out 10 % of the water about every 3 days and replace it with declornated water. You can leave the water set for 24 hrs in an open container before putting it in the tank the clorene will evaporate. Gold fish are vegetarian by nature so feed only gold fish food.Be careful not to over feed as this will cause an over groath of bacteria and add to the polution of the water. You have a nice Xmas And GOOD FISHING.

It is probably being poisoned to death in that tiny little container. Fancy goldfish need a minimum of 10 gallons each when they are babies and they need a good filter, keeping it in something that is less then 1 gallon is horrible. They can grow 8-12 inches and can live 20+ years if taken care of properly. If your mother can't or won't provide the fish with what it needs then she shouldn't have bought it, she also should of researched how to take care of it before she bought it which I highly doubt she did instead of bringing it home to slowly kill it. I hope you learn from her mistakes and you never do something stupid like that. Anyway if you would like to learn how to properly take care of a goldfish you can first start by reading all you can on this site, http://kokosgoldfish.com/

Sounds like your fish is in a tank which is far too small. To be honest, goldfish are actually quite hard to keep, tropicals are easier. To really sustain a pair of goldfish you need a 10 UK gallon tank (sorry, you'll need to check that in US units) and they are around 24x15x17 inches. Don't give your fish too much to eat (only tiny amounts, but i won't start an essay on over feeding fish). Also, when you change the water it needs to be dechlorinated to remove the antibacterial gases the water companies add to your supply, which attacks fish's gills. Sorry, it is a lot to take in, but the important thing is to get it in a bit more water, with a filter, as i'm guessing your beta tank is miniscule.

The tank is too small and goldfish need to be kept in a tank with a filter - you can get a 1 gallon tank with a filter from big pet stores for $10. Goldfish dirty their water faster than many other fish, and so it makes very little sense to keep them in an unfiltered bowl - which is why I don't understand why so many people do. Not blaming you, now you know :)

your goldfish is stressed and will die soon if you don't get a larger container.
imagine how you would feel being locked in a single door wardrobe.
it sits on the bottom and moves a little because that's all the container will let it do.
i think the kindest thing you can do is take it back to the pet shop, NOW!

gold fish like an attravtive environment. you can find rather inexpensive tanks that come with gravel and a bubbler, and fake plants are less than $2 a piece. and make sure to olny feed the fish a small pinch of food every 2 days or so. otherwise, you run the risk of over-feeding.

I'm an avid goldfish flusher. I learned though, that goldfish are a really nasty fish because they secrete more hormones than any other fish. I was told to have one gallon of water for each individual goldfish, so 10 fishies equal 10 gallons of water. I also learned that you don't put algae killer in a tank with an algae eater, oops. Poor hungry, Plecostomus.
