Japan's seizure of Manchuria took place in 1931. There was an explosion in that province of northern China which involved some
Japanese railway; the perfect excuse for Japan to invade the whole of Manchuria and establish the puppet state of 'Manchukuo'.
The L. of Nations protested in vain. Japan was trying to solve its economic problems by conquering other nations. Then, because of this easy success, Japan felt strong enough to go and attack other countries in the following 10 years.
The Emperor Hirohito favoured peace between China and Japan, but some military staff sought Cooperation from the Chinese under Japanese terms.
In 1937 the Marco Polo Bridge Incident (a clash between the Chinese and the Japanese) led to a full-scale war; which later became part of WW II.

actually it went from the sino soviet war in 1905, the japanese took a good portion of siberia and manchuria as well, and just kept going after that.
