Not usually, but yeah some people sleep with their eyes open. I'm pretty sure they don't see anything while sleeping though. My mate just said he thinks it can sometimes be a symptom of eye problems or sleep disorders.

because if you are sleeping with your eyes open it means you have some disorder or problem.

Some normal people sleep with their eyes slightly open. This symptom, however, should prompt a search for an underlying neurological problem, namely bilateral facial weakness. One of the more common causes of such a problem, particularly if it has gone unnoticed by the individual, is a form of muscular dystrophy called facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy. This may be quite mild in some cases and may present only as some asymptomatic facial weakness and mild shoulder girdle muscle atrophy. It runs in families from generation to generation.

You actually can. Some people periodically open their eye's while they are sleeping. It is just harder to fall asleep with them open because it is more of a distraction.

Because the eye needs protection, thus the eyelid. Gnats and other insects could get in the eye when you're asleep, otherwise.

actually, you can. my mom's dad (who passed away b4 i was born) once slept with his eyes open, and my mom went up to him (when she was a kid) and asked if she could sleep over at her friend's house. her dad (who was sleeping) just kind of moaned in his sleep, so she thought that meant it was ok. her parents spent that night REALLY worried!

now we laugh about it.

your eyes need constant moisture that is the reason why we blink to keep moisture in our eyes. have you ever tried keeping your eyes open for a long time without blinking? they get dry and it burns. same thing your eyes will dry out i dont think you want that!
