I understand that batteries and toners are environmentally unfriendly. Is there a specific outlet for such items to be disposed of?

Any of the Office super stores such as Office Depot, Office Max, and Staples will take old toner and ink carts. They often will even give you discounts on future purchases or free ream(s) of paper.

As for batteries, take them to Staples or Radio Shack.

Call your waste management company.

Walgreens will accept your batteries. Some other stores do as well.

Office Depot and Office Max have toner recycling. Check in your city.

Where I live, we'll get fined if we put batteries in the trash.

Take them to your local Council Waste Tip. Mine is an amazing place where you can recycle things you wouldn't think possible! Go to your council web page and they should have info, if not, call the Environmental Services. Some Councils even hand out small plastic boxes you put batteries in and they get emptied each month by the recycling team that come round (I'm assuming you have this in your area).

Call to the manufacturer of the batteries and the toners. Most of these company have their own recycle program for used product, especially printer toner. They will tell you where to get the free delivery service to send it back to them.
