There are a couple of very good resources at the book store.
But HOW MUCH do yo want to learn?
Enough to do your own LIGHT maintenance?
To do your own repairs?
Do you want to turn PRO?
A very good place to start even for someone who is somewhat familiar with automotive is the "Automotive for DUMMIES" and the "Idiot's Guide to the Automobile".
These are good entry level guides and also offer very good detail for starters for someone who wants to advance beyond the mere basics.

Good Luck and Merry Christmas
