America's Second Harvest distributes food to the poor and was one of the key charities active during the Katrina crisis (which I believe is still going on, unfortunately).

AH, there are so MANY to list. I think that this is a highly personal decision, but to many folks they will simply tell you THEIR favorite charity. You must, my dear, scout around for yourself and find one that reaches your heart and addresses concerns of yours; one that in fact, if push came to shove YOU would be willing to work for. I DO know that as you look, there IS a rating sytem as to efficiency; how much goes for administration, vs, providing services.
Taking all this into consideration, give a look at Women for Women International. They are assisting and empowering women all over the world, and teaching them survival skills. They are my personal favorite these days, as they look at the needs of a PLANET, which in my mind is the only way to look at our situation from now on!
Good luck inyour search, and congrats on wanting to pursue this line of thought and inquiry at all!
