The best and the easiest textbook for beginners I'd ever seen
by Aaron Ross and Michele Bousquet
'3ds max 5'
User Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Approx. 900 pages
CD-ROM includes scene files, sample images and animations, plus video demonstrations of 3ds max techniques
http://www.cglearn.com/tutorials/max5/index.html

BUT! The last version of this book is for 3ds max 5
I passed this textbook during a month, 8-9 hours per day several years ago. U would be able to draw a bit and make some easy things, but don't take it as u would be able to do everything u want. It will take time

lol i had that same problem. mayb u should start with something easier like bryce and poser. bryce is a 3d environmental type program. you can make all kinds of stuff in there. and poser is a 3d figure creater. both are easy programs to learn and should help u get a general idea of what to do in 3d studio max. check the source and u will see this guy who uses similar programs to make excellent works of art.

Very expensive lesson learned?

Start with the tutorials that 3ds Max so conviently added for this purpose. Go to Help and Choose Tutorials. They will help.

this is not a beginner program I used to team teach it with a theoretical mathematician and it is a lot of work to come up to speed I would suggest that you go to a lesser complicated program unless you are willing to take a four month class in it as it takes that long for beginners to get it right sorry but that is how big programs like that are.
