There are many reasons for lackluster music quality. Most likely, you're ripping songs at a bitrate lower than 192kb/s (not the best, 320kb/s is better, but not usually necessary). Or, possibly, you're using a pair of low-quality headphones. In no way can an iPod make the music quality better, as CD audio contains about 12x more information than any compressed format, M4A or MP3. However, at 192kb/s, most of the time you won't be able to hear a difference.

An iPod is a meida player. It wouldn't make the music better or worse.

In it's basic sense, an iPod is a hard drive with an LCD screen and a headphone jack. Since there is no contact between the drive head and the drive media, there would be no mechanical variations to the data being read.

No...The headphones do. Try listening to it with sound-insulating ear buds and you'll notice a huge difference.
