I asked a similar question awhile back...My best guess is that they are building interest for the next quarter. No console manufacturer wants to sell all of their equipment in one fiscal year, so I believe that they intently make it in short supply to peak interest. It really ticks me off, though!

On a lighter note, I have walked into stores five times now that had PS3s in stock. They are getting easier to find, just a matter of timing and luck. The clerks have told me that many times they have the units on hand, it is just that no one bothers to ask for them.

why can't they run the commercials?

they will be selling the units for a while - it's not something that you only buy at the end of december

on another note, they sell them as they have them - and they lose 200 bucks everytime they MAKE a ps3, because they cost more than 800 to make, but they sell for 600 (profits are to be gained from games, movies, and accessories)

so they made over a million ps3 systems - that is a sheer loss of about a quarter of a million dollars that won't be gained back from selling the ps3 systems.

they make more as they get more money, and more resources. i would never allow myself to be caught saying that it's to peak interests, because that will show people that i have no clue what i'm talking about

they really didn't need marketing though - they knew that people were going to turn around and auction the first wave of defective units for sums that would double the xbox360's prices - that's advertisement enough!
