Thats what the problem is.

Nicotine is supposed to be more addictive (and harder to shake) than heroin!
I tried cigarettes in high school, again in university and then -- stopped. No biggie!
My mother was a chain smoker for 25 years.
Go figure!
Some people will choose cigarettes for their addiction; others will opt for alcohol, marijuana, coffee, chocolate, shopping... Who knows!?!
People may start smoking for a variety of reasons (to be "cool", because of stress, whatever....some even like the taste of tobacco -- I mever understood that one, but, hey, what do I know!).
Bottom line is, there are people who enjoy the taste of tobacco. There are others who can't break/ shake the habit.
And all the while, the cigarette companies and the government (which gets a whopping amount of taxes from the sale of cigarettes) are laughing all the way to the bank while research shows that smoking causes lung cancer, emphysema and other respiratory illnesses, heart trouble and a host of other health problems for the smoker, any unborn offspring and anyone else unlucky enough to be inhaling second hand smoke!
Best case scenario: DON'T start smoking in the first place!

Ever done this?
Exhale as much air as you can - so there is no air left in your lungs whatsoever.
Now, sniff air in through your nose slowly but loudly. Not through your mouth - through your nose, and keep going till you can't get any more air in.
This is what I can do. It's called a smug sniff. I did something I'm really proud of.
I gave it up after 51 years.
That's FIFTY-ONE YEARS.
I have smoked absolutely everything there is to smoke - including horsehair and dried leaves from the garden when I was a starving student.
I've smoked cigarettes, roll your owns, pipes, cigars, cigars shaped like cigarettes and spliffs. I've smoked the very strongest cigars like cigarettes, inhaling them - I've rolled up and smoked the strongest pipe tobacco - and I gave it up after 51 years.
Bloody hell it was hard.
No patches, no hypnosis, no toy cigarettes - I just gave it up - and OH BOY - do I feel good about it!
It has the most weird side effects.
After about 3 weeks, when you know you've made it, all of a sudden you become the MIGHTY HERO. YOU DID IT!
You feel like a kid again. Your sex urges awaken - my wife couldn't believe it! I wanted to go out dancing the night away.
You feel absolutely fantastic that you have won. You've beaten the buggers.
It's been 4 years now - don't even think about it any more - but I still feel great.
Buddy - if I could do it - believe me - ANYONE can do it.
Unless, of course, you want to DIE early and be poor and stink until you do.

I quit a 30 yr. habit eight months ago and crave them like hell still. It isn't just the addition it's the habit of smoking the feeling of a cigarette after a good meal, with a cup of coffee which I gave up too, and just the relaxing feeling of a good smoke after sex. I miss it like hell though I know it's bad for my health so when u r 51 yrs. old and so many of ur friends and family members r dying around u, u get a sense of mortality, ur own. I choose to prolong my life as much as I possibly can without those filthy habits we call additions.

Do people you are friendly with smoke? Some people continue with a habit to fit in with the crowd. It's interesting that teenages often give this reason when they begin smoking! They think they will just be social smokers then become hooked. It's also self image, it's difficult to think of yourself in a different way when you see yourself as a smoker. Plus of course...nicotine addiction!

Simply put, it's an addiction. Nicotine was added to tobacco to get you hooked. They say quitting cigarette smoking is more difficult than trying to quit heroine.

Well its hard to stop. I never smoked but I know too many who do and cannot quit. Its scary how much of a hold it has on people. I have seen people on oxygen and dying from emphysema and still smoking. Yes smoking does kill and its a slow painful death. Since you are in the UK you have access to quality health care (wish we had this in the states) please get help and try to stop.

Picture a ninety year old man who's never smoked or drank in his life. Sitting in his chair urinating all over himself while he tries to remember what day of the week it is, his first loves name, when he last ate! Waiting for his inevitable death.
Me I'd rather die choking on my last 5 percent of lung, with a shrivelled liver, so long as I could still remember who I was!
