if you have a good filter and pump in there (doesnt have to be expensive, ours isnt) and you feed him smaller meals a couple of times a day instead of 1 big one, Just enough that he can eat in about 1 min (doesnt sound like long but it is). if he doesnt eat it all scoop it out. What we have found is that its the little bits of food that he doesnt eat that were stinking up the aquarium, our turtle (snapper) eats peices of beef heart about the size of a 10c peice, we give him 2 of those 3 times a day. His tank is still clear and we havent had to clean it for 2 months so far.

1. Make it big enough. Small, cramped tanks get filthy quickly. Aim for a tank or plastic tub that offers at least 10 gallons of water per inch of turtle length.
2. Set up some filtration about 2-3 times more powerful than a fish tank.
3. Even with good filters, change a chunk of the water weekly or so as needed.

I even have infant turtles and that they are messy. they poop each the place. the clear out in basic terms keeps the water sparkling yet does not p.c.. up the poop. so i offered a vacuum fish. and it rather works magic, all it does is bypass around the tank cleansing all the turtles mess. attempt making a waterfall so as that the water circulates which will keep the tank lots cleanser. sturdy success. oh and feed them two times an afternoon for bout quarter-hour what ever they do no longer consume take it out the tank so it wont make water replace coloration.

My turtles are kept in a large kiddie pool. I clean it every 2 months
Scrub the tank. Add a filter
If it is getting dirty fast they may need a larger tank.
