Okay I have a NETGEAR Wireless Router and a CABLE Internet Connection but don't know how to connect the two.

Do I have to run the INSTALLATION CD BEFORE I HOOK UP THE MODEM TO THE ROUTER? Or do I just hook the modem into the router then run the installation CD?

I have tried to run the Installation CD before hooking anything up but it keeps stalling.

I need specific step by step instructions on what to do next...PLEASE HELP!

You really don't even need the installation CD.

Hook up the router to the modem and the computer to the router.

wall > modem > router > computer

Then, from your computer, you should be able to browse to address 192.168.0.1 (or something like that depending on your router.) You'll need to log in with the admin account.

Then follow the on-screen Wizard to configure the router. The router should be able to communicate with the modem to connect it to your ISP. This replaces the software that came from your ISP.

Your cable company already supplies a router, though they call it a modem. Routers connected to routers can only rout traffic to each other - around in a circle - no Internet through the second router. You will need to disable NAT and other router functions to get the wireless router to work, or connect it directly to the cable. It is probably NOT that kind of router that is - no co-ax connectors.

Your best bet is to trade it in for a WiFi switch, or access point which doesn't do any routing. Sometimes they call it a bridge which is actually different than a switch.

Most cable companies can (and often do) block the sub-net addresses which your router will use. Tech support at the cable company can "unblock" the router and it will work fine.

Alternately, Netgears have a configuration interface usually reached through your web browser by typing "192.168.0.1" in the address bar. By default the password is "password" with no user, or no user no password at all, depending on the model. you will need to disable NAT and allow the Cable modem to handle DHCP. Confused? If you have not done this before, it can be confusing, so stick with calling you ISP's tech support

If someone has previously set a user/pass you will need that to get into the router. If you get really stuck there is a reset button on the back, you can reset to factory defaults with a paper clip.

You can also type Netgear and the model number in a search engine, and look for the support site for your model.

Hope that helped, without specifics (like: are you using the cable modem and a wireless router?) it's hard to be more precise.

Read the router manual!! It will tell you how to configure it.

Basically you need to connect to the wireless router by using a cable for initial configuration, then set the computer with IP/netmask same as wireless router. Proceed to access router from IE, then start the configuration.

Here is an example on how to configure wireless router the first time: http://www.home-network-help.com/wireless-router.html

make sure to bring your network up in this order:

#1 - Cable/Dsl modem, wait for link light to come on, pwr up router

#2 - wait for link light to come on router, pwr up PC

#3 - go to START > RUN > type in ipconfig /all

* make sure you are getting an IP address from the DHCP server

once you have baseline connectivity established then lock down the security on your wireless network...
