I went home for Christmas. Depending on where you are studying, you should have time to participate in clubs and sports. The school I attended had sports and club days on Wednesday afternoon and no classes were offered then. Working requires on what your visa states. I don't think you will be able to work more than 20 hours a week (if studying in the UK).

For the United States:
If you have a regular student visa you can work up to 20 hours per week, but you need to get your Social Security card and other paperwork before you start.
You should be able to participate in any sports and clubs you desire, in fact, some people go just for that experience.
If you can afford it, there should be no problem in going home for the holidays. Just keep all your papers in order!

Well when I study a broad I am usually working in my part time job as a bartender. Coming home for the holidays should be fine, just don't come home knocked up.
