you don't have to do anything you don't want to. but the exchange of gifts represents the giving of one's self without the having to receive physical reward. just knowing that you have touched someone's heart is reward enough.

Buying gifts isn't actually a requirement and, if viewed as one, would remove much of the joy of the season. Getting something special for someone you care for should be something you choose to do because you want to. To bring a little happiness into someones day, to see their delight upon receiving a soon to be treasured book or game, to bring a soft smile onto your loves face... That's why you'd buy, or make, a gift for someone. Not due to a "Well everybody does it" mentality. Just do it if it feels right!

Many possiblities ... to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Maybe back then people lived on limited means and it's a good excuse to splurge at the end of year to get some necessities and good food that we would otherwise enjoy more frequently. Or the proximity to winter solistice - cold weather, people need a reason to have a party.
The best story I have heard is Saint Nicolas' sending of a lot presents on that day as a gesture of charity and generosity.

You don't have to. My family has had financial difficulties for several years so we have not exchanged gifts. It has not lessened the meaning of Christmas for us. I do wish I could buy them gifts..
However, to answer your question, the exchanging of gifts is part of our culture. It is an opportunity to demonstrate to others how you feel about them. If it is strong tradition in your family, it might not be taken well if you were to skip it.

It all comes down to, if you know your going to be given gifts by others and you don't return the favor, you'll feel like a cheap sap. Charlotte C

Some people say to remember the presents that Jesus received when he was born.
I think it's the stores who actually push this tradition into the Holidays to increase their sales.

Because the wise men brought Jesus gifts.
Now we do it to prove how much we have, we prove our love through money.

I guess it's one of those things that that go with the flow..but you really don't have too, it doesn't mean you are being selfish unless you really are, cause it's better to give then receive, but X-mas is not about presents anyway.
