I wouldn't "ask" them to lie...but I would say,"Ya know...maybe the gift wasn't all that great....but...it's the thought that counts! So, let's just be polite, okay?"

Being polite isn't the same as lying.
They don't need to say, "Wow, this is awesome! It's the best present ever!" in order to be polite.
They can just say, "Thank you. I really appreciate your gift." That's the truth--they appreciate the thought behind the gift, even though they might not like the gift itself.

There is nothing wrong with that at all. Sometimes people give absurd gifts to children.... gifts that do not in any shape of form match the childs age or ability.
That said, a gift is a gift, and the child should say thank you!

Most people get gifts they don't particularly enjoy, and you should raise your childen to say, "Thank you" and know it's the thought that counts, even if the thought was so totally wrong. It's like Ralphie in A Christmas Story and the terrible pink bunny costume, try it on, be nice, cry later.

That's not wrong. I lie all the time for the sake of politeness.

The truth will set you and everyone else free.
Just say thanks for the gift, and if they ask "Did you like my gift" Say "Yeah I liked the gift(As in that person giving you something, not the gift itself)"

No, but its not bad to tell them yourself that your son/doughter didnt really like the gift. so that they dont give them a bad one next year, i think your family members can live with it.

no not wrong at all. telling a lie is withholding the truth from someone who deserves to know. do you think your family deserves to get theyre fellings hurt when it could have been prevented?
