well, if it closes on it's own, then the laser may have burned out. or shorted out
if that's the case.. ha ha, that sucks.. sorry. it really does suck.
if the d drive doesn't close by itself when you push the button, then you may have burned out the motor that closes the tray and now it thinks that it's always open. which, also sucks.
any other questions, if you'd be more specific, i could help.

Dont ever push it close? Ha, I personally use the eject button to open/close but pushing on the tray with just enough pressure to close it is acceptable.
drivers? Ha, current and even older CD/DVD drives do not need drivers for most OS, maybe the guy above is talking about DOS.
Seems like you either have a conflict with your CD/DVD drives, your onboard controller, or cables came loose.
As the above poster has suggested check your device manager to see if the device shows up, if it does then uninstall and reboot, did you recently install new software? then uninstall it and see if your cd/dvd drive works.
You can also check Disk Management to see if it shows up there, if it does then see if you have a drive letter conflict, otherwise see if you can enable drive from there. If not you have some other conflict. If it doesn't show up then do the following.
Turn your computer off for the following steps then boot up to test if problem has been solved.
If still not working then open your case, check the cables to see if all is still connected, check your CD/DVD drive, still not working then change the ports the CD/DVD are connected to, if you don't have a free port then you might have to disable a known good device and plug the problem CD/DVD drive into that port - Don't unplug your main harddrive. If still not work then hook it up as a slave to your main hardrive port, of course if it's sata then switch ports with the main drive.
If you find one of the ports is the problem and you don't have any other free ports then you'll have to get a controller card and plug it into a free PCI or if newer PCI-e port.
If none of those work then your CD/DVD drive may have died.

Go to Control Panel > System and then navigate to Device Manager. Does the CD-ROM show up with a little yellow triangle with an exclamation point inside it?
If so, you probably don't have the correct driver for it. If you know the model, you may be able to get it from the vendor's web site. Otherwise, search the web for it. Short of that, you may be able to double-click that device and select the update driver option. If configured properly, Windows may go out and search for the correct driver.
If the drive doesn't show up in the list at all, it may not be connected to the IDE channel or may not have power. Or it may not have been installed in the OS.
First try selecting the Add New Hardware option in the Control panel. If that doesn't work, then you'll need to open up the box and make sure the IDE and power cables are connected.
If none of this works, it could be that the drive itself is bad.
Hope this helps.

There is a high chance that your CD drive has gone bad. The best thing to do is to purchase another drive. Fixing CD drives is is a waste of time and money. Based on what you have put in your question and assuming that your CD drive is internal, meaning that it is inside your computer case, I am sure that your CD drive had died and needs to be replaced. CD drives can be purchased at any computer store.

Don't ever push the drawer in. Always use the button to open and close. It may be corrupted now and you may have to call repair. You may have to replace it.
Good Luck

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
