Pit bulls are a popular dog among dog fighters. They're a cheap dog (both back when and even more so now), so they were easy to get a hold of. Now the pit bull market (I guess you'd call it that) is saturated with dogs who's bloodlines contain these dogs that were taught to be mean and untrustworthy. As a result, some still inherit that demeanor, and become dangerous.
Personally, I believe that if the owner of the dog is attentive and loving, you shouldn't have any trouble (but remember there's always a lemon somewhere). However, not everyone has the time or energy to put into making sure their dog doesn't become dangerous. Pit bulls or otherwise.
And just an endnote: Some "Pit Bull Attacks" aren't even made by pit bulls. The media has apparently decided to make Pit Bulls a scapegoat. I've heard of at least 3 where the dogs were Golden Retrievers or some other breed.

Because i had a mix of one and it bit me, when i was little. Then i got another dog and the another pitbull bite it. I hate pitbulls.

Because some ghetto thug gang banger POS raised some bad ones and society is so stupid they dont realize its not the dog its the OWNER!!

Maybe it has something to do with all the people that have been bitten,
or the children's faces that have been scared, FOR LIFE.
