The only way to diagnose constipation in a baby is to see hard stools, otherwise it can either be a) normal or b) a sign your baby isn't eating enough. I would wait until your baby seems uncomfortable or until you see hard (well firm) poop. Try feeding your baby more often (particularly if you are breastfeeding)
NEVER give your baby medications when they are under 6 weeks, this includes sugar, sugar syrup, karo syrup, corn syrup etc. Never give water to a baby.
NEVER insert anything hard into a baby's rectum.
Massage is fine, that never hurt anyone, unless you really press too hard. Warm baths, fine.

my son is a month old and has the same problem. I know exactly how you feel. Helpless right? Well try giving her a warm bath, give her a little water but no more than an oz a day. Also she'll probably get a stomach ache because of all the trying and nothing happening try warm water and a small piece of peppermint candy let it dissolve your baby will love it and it will help dizzolve it will get rid of the sugary part. But its also normal for babies to not go for three days. Give it a week after trying these ideas and if she still can't go then call your doctor. Good Luck!!

First of all why would you call the hospital nursery, at this time you should of had a pediatrician see the baby to check to make sure her weight is okay and to see of she is jaundice. If you have a doctor than you may consult with them. If the baby does not seem uncomfortable than I would leave her alone and wait for her to poop. If the baby is fussy and gassy then I would stimulate her rectum with a lubed up thermometer and also give her a warm bath, she is very young and I wouldn't recommend giving her any mdeications or prune juice, I would take her temperature and do the bath and see how that goes

First of all congratulations on the birth of your baby. You must be excited but overwhelmed at the same time! I know I was when I had my son. I totally understand what you are going through! My son went to the bathroom 6-8 times for the day when he was first born, as soon as i brought him home from the hospital he became extremely contstipated. Make sure you are giving your baby water, even if you are breastfeeding. water will loosen the bowels. if the baby goes on to day 3 without having a bowel movement, carry him to see the ped. My son is now 13 months old and still suffers from constipation. he is on medication to help this. but always remember MOMS know best. if you think something is not rigth, call the nursery of the baby's doctor. if u want to talk further or let me know how things turn out please feel free to email me at queen_bling22@hotmail.com . take care.

Give the baby more time to poop. SOme babies only poop every other day.
You will know when the baby is consitaped. If the baby tries to poop and they are hard and small.
If the baby is constipated you can give the baby some karo syrup water or formula. 1 tsp with 2 ozs. My baby was when she was born...it was her formula and she had to have the karo syrup water three times a \day. It is the sugar in it that makes htme go.

Some may be grossed out by this, but one method used in hospitals to induce a bowel movement is called digital stimulation. You can simply massage your baby's rectum for a few minutes with your fingertip. No need to insert your fingertip or anything like that...just gently make circles with your fingertip on the rectum. It's often very effective. Good luck.

Go ahead and call your pediatrician now if you are concerned. That's why they are there. If your baby isn't showing any signs of discomfort, she probably isn't constipated. And if she is -- don't give her corn syrup or anything like that without talking to her doctor first!

They have saline baby suppository's that will help or you could massage her belly and grab her at her ankles and push her legs gently up to her belly and rotate them outwards(do that about 10 times).congratulations, and if this advice does not work I would call the doc. cause newborns are suppose to poop like 8 times a day, i should know, I am a mother of 5, and my youngest is only 11wks. old

My son had the same problems and still does. He only went every other day and now we are lucky if he goes 2-3 times a week. WE used karo syrup to help and it did. We also gave him a baby suppository (spelling???). If he has had reguliar ones up til now I would keep and eye on him and do make the call to the nurse. They know best. Good luck!
