My 3 year old daughter is getting sick (I think just a cold), no fever yet, just a stuffy nose and a cough here and there. I just had my son Dec 10th. What can I do to keep him from getting sick? I try to keep her from getting to close but I dont want her to feel like she can't be close to her baby, she loves him so much. What should I do?

I would make sure she washes her hands and avoid any kissing/ getting in his face. This should apply to everyone else that holds/cares for him. Congrats and Merry Christmas!

It will be pretty much impossible to keep those cold germs away from your new baby. If you are nursing, the baby is getting tons of antibodies from you to help protect his against these germs (that's why it's okay to nurse even when you have a cold or the flu). Even if you aren't nursing, babies and little kids get an average of like 5 colds a year, though sometimes just a runny nose. There are still things you can do to help, like promoting hand washing with your daughter, and do it yourself. You can also tell your daughter not to kiss your baby, or cough or sneeze on him. But don't stress too much, there is only so much you can do. If he does get a cold, all you can do is try to keep him comfortable. Keep a cool-mist humidifier running in his room to help with congestion, elevate the head-end of the mattress in his crib a little (they make wedges or just use a rolled towel, also helps with congestion), and keep a little vaseline on his cheeks and under his nose to keep his skin from getting chapped by a runny nose.

you can also talk to your pediatrician for other ideas on how to manage a cold, or to keep him from getting one in the first place.

The best thing to do is keep her away from the new baby. If this is impossible than make sure she washes her hands very often, but I woiuldn't just make her do it, make everyone in the house do it because you can transfer her germs to the baby without getting sick. Tell her that it is okay for her to touch the babies feet until she feels better.

chances are it's going to happen anyway, but since they are siblings this will be a lifelong battle. If it's just her little kid germs he will probably be OK since you're in the same family. If she brought home some strange virus from daycare I would take every precaution necessary (regardless of letting her touch the baby) She also has to realize that she has germs that are not safe for the baby and this is a way of loving him too. Look at it this way, it will boost his immune system (getting used to all the icky stuff)

Try to keep them away from each other as much as possible. No breathing on him. Wash your hands. And keep that sanitizer stuff everywhere. Chances are he will get sick anyways.

My five year old got sick and i treid everything to keep the new baby from getting sick but three days later she was.

The doctor says that it is hard to keep the baby from getting sick because it is a virus in the air.

make sure it isn't cold, your immune system is lowered quiet a lot when you get cold and your more likely to catch a cold from someone else. keep her away from the baby until she doesn't appear sick any longer, thequicker you can get rid of the cold, thequicker things can go back to normal. you would want her to be around the baby if the baby got sick anyway.

Breastfeed your baby if you can, wash your hands a lot and try to keep them away from each other but if you cannot than I would not worry about this. The main thing is to keep washing your hands.

I really don't think there is going to be anyway to prevent it. You could be a carrier for the germs. Just make sure you wash your hand as much as possible. Good Luck!!

Check with your doctor, but I believe your immunities are passed on to your child, and that they are less likely to get sick at this age, but check with the doctor. Also, let her wear a mask possibly if she is sick.
