whilst the new "N " proticol is backwardly compatible with "G/B" - is there anything to be gained - by only upgradeing router??

No benefit, changing the drivers won't do any good. you would have to buy a usb dongle/pcmia card that is 801.N (pre N to be technical) and disable your laptops internel wireless controller.If you just use the router to connect to the internet then 801.g is more than fast enough.

No. If your laptop's wireless device only supports G or B, there's nothing to be gained by upgrading your router to N.

yes it will be backwards compatible...no reason to upgrade your current equipment. that standard has not been ratified yet...
