is it okay to eat raw cookie dough during pregnancy? i read that they pasturize the eggs, which kills the bacteria, but i'm still not sure. and if i do eat it, what harmful effects could it have on the baby?

What, exactly, does it say in the ingredients?

The tube of Pillsbury chocolate chip in my fridge is only peripherally associated with real eggs -- they're listed as 'dried,' I think.

In some cases, eating hyper-processed junk is a good thing.

But -- calling the manufacturer would be the way to go.

If you are worried about it, don't eat it. Better for you not to worry about it. If you want to eat it, as long as it hasn't been sitting out for a long time, go ahead. You'd be at equal risk eating something with mayo that's been out for over half an hour. I'd suggest that you make it yourself with the highest quality ingredients.

"When you carefully analyze the risk of contracting salmonella from raw eggs, you will find that it is actually quite low. A study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture earlier this year (Risk Analysis April 2002 22(2):203-18) showed that of the 69 billion eggs produced annually, only 2.3 million of them are contaminated with salmonella.

So simple math suggests that only 0.003 percent of eggs are infected. The translation is that only one in every 30,000 eggs is contaminated with salmonella. This gives you an idea of how uncommon this problem actually is.

While it is likely that I will consume more than 30,000 eggs in my lifetime, most of you will not. However, inevitably someone out there will find a salmonella-contaminated egg, so it is important to understand how to seriously decrease your risk of infection.

Salmonella infections are usually present only in traditionally raised commercial hens. If you are purchasing your eggs from healthy chickens this infection risk reduces dramatically. Remember, only sick chickens lay salmonella-contaminated eggs. If you are obtaining high quality, cage-free, organically fed, omega-3 enhanced chicken eggs as recommended above, the risk virtually disappears."

If you must have it, get some commercially prepared cookie dough ice cream. It is sold to be eaten "doughy".

Avoid eating raw eggs in homemade ice cream or eggnog. Commercially manufactured ice cream and eggnog are made with pasteurized eggs and have not been linked with salmonella enteritidis infections.

I don't see an up-side to risking it. I UNDERSTAND the temptation...but it IS bad for you, even when not pregnant. Did you know stuff like "cookie dough ice cream" isn't even cookie dough? They have to leave out the egg. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I don't think you should take anything with egg content raw especially with the rampant cases of bird flu these days.
