Okay, this is how it usually works.
Callbacks will happen when a director needs more information about actors involved. Some reasons for being called back might be to compare heights for couples or other relationship roles. A director might just not be sure which one of two people to choose for a part. There are a lot of things that a director has to worry about when choosing actors for character roles. Acting ability is only one of them.
Don't let your guard down yet. While it is a good sign, being invited to callbacks does not necessarily mean that you've got a part. Just like how some people get parts without being invited to callbacks.
Just do your best, and above all, be professional. Directors love mature actors.

If you're called back, it means that they liked what they saw at your initial reading, and now you're under consideration for a specific role (or roles).
Of course, this is a good thing. At initial (screening) auditions, you never really know what they're looking for. They may have some very specific physical/vocal attributes in mind for specific characters. This is why actors generally shouldn't be too upset when they aren't called back...it often has little, if anything, to do with whether they read well or not.
BUT...if you reach the callback stage, you know you're in the ballpark. You should take it as an invitation to do MORE of what you did in the original audition. Let 'er rip!

Yes. Those who get called back will usually do some cold readings to determine what part they are good for. A callback means you are IN.

It means they are considering you for a part - don't know which part. But it is definitely a very good thing because many people don't ever get called back again. So congratulations and good luck!

YUP definitely a good thing. Go back with an open mind and humility and WILLINGNESS. The director is seeing something in you to re-examine. Be yourself, and let your light shine. Also, if you do NOT get the part THANK the casting agents and director. Let them know that you appreciated being considered for this part and that you would like to be considered in the future. GOOD LUCK and break a leg!
