I thought that they were trying to keep the Eastern Berlin-ers from crossing over to West Berlin, so shouldn't the wall have been built to surround East Berlin?

Because West Berlin is in the middle of East Germany.

Berlin, the city, is far from the rest of West Germany, accessible only by a thin strip on the Audobahn. However, due to its significance, it was divided after the war. Geographically, it belongs in East Germany. Yet, if the East Germans went into West Berlin, they could simply walk down the autobahn (many miles) until they reached "main" West Germany.

The wall was not built around West Berlin. It was erected between the French sector in the NW, the British sector in the W and the American sector in the SW. The Russians have no need to build a wall around the city and you seem to forget that Berlin was in East Germany so to the East of the city it was the DDR and to the West of the city also. Berlin was an enclave within the DDR.

It's because Berlin was actually located fully within the area known as 'East Germany' but, because it was the capital, it was split just like the country was. The wall was built to keep East Germans from entering democratically controlled West Berlin.

The wall was built where it was because at the close of WWII Germany was divided into sectors influenced by the victors/allies. Russia control the eastern part, the western nation, i.e., U.S., France, and Britain, controlled the western parts. When the russians/soviets began to push for communism, and began basically stealing from the east germans to bring back technology, resources, good to Russia, a wall was built to prevent the west from stopping the soviets and weakening the possibility of communism's spread. Remember, in early Soviet Union, the only way it could survive was by annexing other countries or hoping for a world communist revolution. Otherwisw, communism would fail.
