I retain water like crazy. I'll gain and lose several pounds in just a day or two. My rings will be too big, and then too small. My jeans won't fit some days. This week has been the worst. I gained 5 pounds in just three days and today my face is all swollen. I'm not pregnant and this happens all month, not just when I'm on my period. I know that some water retention is normal, but this much? Should I be concerned? Is it possibly a symptom of a larger problem? I drink lot's of water and I try to avoid MSG and too many preservatives in my food, but it still doesn't help.

Avoid salt and sugar, as both make you retain water. A gentle diuretic may help- caffeine, or you can get pills from the store. Temperature affects how much water you retain as well- the colder your body is, the less water you retain. (When your body is overheated, you retain water to prevent dehydration, and when it is cold, your body sheds the excess so it has less to heat.)

Go to a doctor, though, if its something that concerns you.

Sounds like you have a case of Adema. It's just where people will retain water for any reason at all. If you have it and sit alot you will swell up like a balloon. Go see your dr and ask for Lasex. If dr prescribes them also ask for Potasium tablets as well. Any type of water retention pill will eat at your potasium levels.

Cut back on carbs. Storing glycogen (carbohydrate) in your body requires water. For every 1 gram of glycogen you store, your body hangs onto 3 grams of water.

Cutting back on your carb intake should help your water retention.
