If my USB device (iPOD) is plugged in when I power up my PC, the system hangs. I don't believe it is a boot device issue because the system does not even get to the power on self test. If I then unplug the device, the system remains hung. If I turn power on without the device plugged in, the PC boots fine. I can then plug the device in once the OS boot sequence begins. This workaround is not practical for me.

It is an old Dell PC with a Phoenix BIOS (dated around 1994).

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Your Ipod is, for the most part a second hard drive, your computer sees it and tries to use it in it's boot sequence. The same thing happens if you leave a (ha ha) floppy disk in the drive. either leave your pc running or disconnect your ipod when you do turn it off.

You can't plug a USB device in before it boots. i did the same thing by mistake once on a laptop. i had to use a memory stick once and i plugged it in too early and it just showed a black screen. later i found out that any device that you can store data on will cause the computer to think it is a second drive. the computer will try to boot from that drive and because it does not have an OS on it, the computer will "hang"

You might check Dell's support site and see if there are any BIOS updates for your machine, but it's a longshot. With that old a machine, there's probably not much you can do except what you've been doing - plug in the iPod after the machine starts booting up.

Does this happen with other USB devices? Given your PC is older, you certainly don't have USB 2.0. Even though the devices are supposed to be backward compatible, you may have a firmware version on your PC's USB that predates a standard implemenation.

Time to get a new PC, I guess %-)

how you gone to the motherboard manufacture and looked at the BIOS updates for your board type ? that's a very old BIOS date.

that's where I would start, that's a pure hardware issue with nothing to do with the OS...
