I know you asked for guys only, but I know the answer.

Do not under ANY circumstances wear a "festive" tie!

If it is very formal, you have to go with a "penguin suit", meaning a formal dinner jacket with tails.

If it is less formal, a black tux with a tie and vest in the color of your choice, preferably matching your date's dress if you have a date.

IF the event if formal (as in wedding formal) You will want to wear a nice dress shirt. To keep the look young and stylish, you can go for a fun color. A nice vibrant blue dress shirt with a amazing striped tie in colors like orange, yellows, navy's, white...etc. In order not to look TOO stuffy and overly dressed try rolling back the cuff on your sleeve, its fun and stylish. A plain white dress shirt, with a fun print tie and black slacks is always classic. Avoid pleated paints, option for plain fronted pants.

A less formal event, try wearing a print(stripe, plaid, floral) button down UNDER a Neutral (black, white, gray, brown) polo shirt. Pull your button down collar out over the polo collar. Pair this outfit with a fashion blazer/sports coat, or cable knit (open front) sweater. With so many layers on the top you can easily pull this outfit to gather with some dark wash jeans.

as for colors, in General as a rule of thumb you want to keep from doing too many bright colors. use bright colors such as Royal blue, red, teal, maroon with neutrals. To make sure you are color safe, always wear a nice clean neutral and accent the outfit with a vibrant tie, or inner layer. Colorless is always classic and fun, try doing blacks whites and grays. When using blacks and whites remember to incorporate a print to avoid looking too blocky.
