Do colleges try to push a liberal agenda on their students?
I'm entering an English major in Jan. and I'd like to know what to be prepared for.

Bad Liberal, and Answer man prove my point EXACTLY. You don't have to be a flaming liberal to enjoy English. Looks like I'll have fun, I dare someone who claims to be "open, free-thinking" to try and push their agenda on me. It'll be great fun.

I can guarentee I'm more free thinking and open-minded than the majority of liberals that reply. I myself am a free thinking agnostic open to MANY ideas and beliefs. I am not religioius or athiest yet I am open to the ideas of both.I'm am very much a centrist and the last thing I need is a extreme closed minded liberal with an agenda trying to convert me. Touting off liberal as being open-minded doesn't make it so. I look forward to challenging any agendas I perceive wether it come from the left or the right. I'm there to learn English not to debate extremist political views.

I've had liberal professors, conservative professors and the kind who just taught the content. Give me the last type everytime. As an English major, you will do lots of reading. If you are concerned about a liberal or conservative bias, visit the professor and ask to see a previous outline of required reading. That should give you an idea of what to expect.

Because schools are pushing a liberal agenda. History is a good example. Talking about how Jefferson was a slave owner instead of the facts that he banned importation of slaves as president, wrote freedom for all slaves into the original DOI and did more to end slavery than any person that ever lived. Also, core subjects like math and reading are far less important than they used to be. They've been replaced with sex ed, teaching about global warming/recycling and other liberal causes. Most students graduating high school today can't read on a high school level. Quite a few can't read at all. Most of those people vote democrat too.

Hey! I'm a (VERY) left-leaning English academic! Come to my college! I'll have you singing The Internationale before the end of the first semester!
And what will you do with all that liberal literature you might have to face? Do you only want stuff by Ezra Pound or Kingsley Amis or anyone else on the right who writes? There isn't much of that about I'm afraid - you may get bored.
I think you should give it a miss. Work in a tire yard instead.

They'll be more likely to push grammar on you. Which is just as dangerous... once you understand that it's "nuclear" not "nucular", Bush's speeches on foreign policy start to sound quite scary.
By the way, if all colleges and all professors were indoctrinating people to be liberals, there's no way we would be living in a world where corporations, investments, politics, are run by educated people who have no problem with destroying the world to make a profit. I mean maybe you don't agree with how I'm stating that, but you can't say that these educated people are doing liberal things, conservative business is run by well-educated people.

You might hear that as many professors feel that they must be liberal, its like a lifestyle for academics. In many ways they are not free to think for themselves as they live in a bizarro McCarthy era world there. But you are in college, you can believe what you want and you will have great fun disagreeing with your instructors. You have the chance to learn many things in college and one is that you should not believe everything that is said or written. If you can spot slanted opinions you can reject them.

I have done a half of a semester of college now, and I have to say, i had one teacher try such, my psych. 101 teacher. It was pretty interesting to watch and amuse myself with. Some of the books try to push the agenda also. Since you already realize that such will be pushed on you, then you will do just fine. Watch out for words such as "good" and other simple bias words

The college Will not "push" an agenda. They will expose both sides of an argument to you and let you decide which you prefer.

Somebody needs to talk sense to you. Matter of fact, you might find out that all liberals are not baby killing, welfare receiving, Atheist, you might find out that we are human and we have a better way for Americans to lead a progressive life.

You will learn more about the horrible things we did to ourselves on Sept 11th and about the mating habits of the lesbian spider monkey and all the horrible things the republicans are doing to the environment. The answer is yes.

Usually colleges allow you to take what ever classes you want to take. So I guess that is pretty liberal. The Republicans haven;t started telling us yet what classes we can take. Only how to worship and what to call a tree.
